Gabby, Talcott and I went to Accra to go to the Makola Market. I was expecting a similar experience to the Arts Center, but was relieved that it was a lot better. The people did not attack you and lead you everywhere because it was more of a local market. We then ate lunch at a local place there and I got rice and some of my friends got the palm nut soup and fufu which are authentic foods in Ghana. They did not really like what they got, and we felt bad for not eating much of our food.

This is the fufu
Then we went to Osu neighborhood which has Global Mamas and a grocery store. Global Mama's was my favorite store because all Ghanian women make the materials and jewelry and get paid minimum wage unlike most places in Ghana.

I had a trip today for Habitat for humanity. It was a 2 hour bus ride and was nice to be able to help out the community. When getting there, we were split up into groups to be able to work on different tasks that go into building the homes. I was in the group to stack the blocks, the first stage of building a house. There was another group doing something that I would describe like laying bricks. Another group was plastering the walls. (Sorry I am not the greatest at describing this). When stacking the blocks, they would fall apart at the slightest drops. The dirt was crumbled everywhere and would fly into my eyes. I was so dirty. Lunch was very sad. To see the level of poverty there is hard to explain. There were about 5 little boys hanging out with us the whole day. They were just watching us eat, and I didn't like half of the food in my packed lunch provided SAS so I was giving it to them. They were collecting boxes full of food from everyone, but they would not eat it because they said they had to give it to their mom's.
Going to get water to make the plaster.
At lunch.

Turner, Matt and I went to the Aburi Botanical Gardens. It was a 2.5 hour drive to get there. We were driving through the mountains and saw some villages while getting there. When we got there, it was a 20 minute tour of the gardens. We had lunch there and the place actually had fries (as you can tell I get excited when these places have food that I like to eat!! Haha)

Turner Sarah and I were going to the Tema market place to get some souvenirs because we didn't want to go back to Accra again because of the long ride and the stress it is like when going there. We decided to go to the mall because the market didn't have anything we wanted, but our taxi driver did not know what we were wanting and took us to the wrong mall. We decided to stay there because it was so hot in the cab sitting in traffic and did not want to keep paying for taxi's. We went to a bar there because we saw two SAS people there and hung out until getting back on the ship to sail to South Africa.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like you're having a great experience so far! I enjoy your blog - particularly the habitat for humanity experience. I really wish I would have got to take a trip like that in college. Good luck during the rest of your trip. I'll try to drop back in and see how it's going. I'd love to talk with you when you get back about opportunities next year! Have FUN!
